VISION: Community Voices wants to bring the city council back to the people so that we can become a safer, more inclusive and sustainable city. In order to achieve this goal we will introduce ‘triple bottom line’ accounting for all decision making within Council: balancing the economic, social/cultural and environmental aspects of policy and development proposals.
Our priority will be to manage the amalgamation in a responsible and transparent manner while still delivering effective, efficient, basic services to the community. Specifically our aim is to attend to the core business of council, which means higher priority for roads, drains, water and sewerage than is currently the case.
TOWN PLANNING/SUSTAINABILITY:
• We will support development provided it is sustainable and the end result is to the benefit of the whole community
• We will support urban development which enhances and supports existing infrastructure
• Attend to the core business of council which means higher priority for roads, drains, water and sewerage
Community Voices recognises that the amalgamation of the twin cities will reveal the true position of both Thuringowa and Townsville City Council’s financial arrangements. Given that the amalgamation is a work in progress and community expectations are high, we cannot in good faith promise rate reductions without knowing the real situation. To support that vision Community Voices will, if elected:
We will:
• Instigate a thorough independent review of the Council’s Schedule of Rates and Charges
• Standardise rates across the amalgamated city of Townsville
• Set rates in a fair and equitable manner, capping rates for aged pensioners and those on fixed incomes subject to a means test
• Address operating costs while not decreasing services
• Only borrow money when absolutely necessary
• Canvas all avenues available for State and Federal Governments funding
• Ensure that all new developments are constructed with adequate infrastructure
• Support the funding of community projects on an absolute priority basis
• Eliminate unnecessary spending
