Why I want to serve on
the Townsville City Council
I have lived in Townsville
since 1979 which almost makes me a local. I lived in Hermit Park for
the first twenty one years and in Annandale for the past eight. I love
living in Townsville - I love the beautiful natural environment that
we share and the wonderful community that we live in.
I believe that both City
Councils have done some great things to improve our cities during the
past thirty years but I believe they have now lost the plot. Both the
Mooney and the Tyrell administrations are characterized by a "development
at all costs" attitude. What we need is sustainable development that
focuses on the "quality of life" in Townsville. This is what the
Community Voices team is committed to - and this is why I am running
for election.
Personal Attributes I
would bring to the Council
- Community involvement:
for many years I have been actively involved in community organisations
such as the House of Prayer Catholic community, Crossroads (a Uniting
Church group that works with people with disabilities), the Oxfam
Walk against Want, North Queensland Conservation Council, Townsville
Roadrunners, Townsville Thai-Australian Society.
- Proven commitment
to human rights: I have been convenor of the Townsville Amnesty International
group for over ten years and I am currently President of the Queensland
Branch of Amnesty International Australia (AIA).
- Governance experience:
I have served on the National Board of AIA for the past three years.
AIA has an annual budget of 20 million dollars and employs 70 staff
throughout Australia.
- Engineering Knowledge:
I have worked as a water engineer both in Australia and overseas. The
research project for my MEngSc degree examined strategies to reduce
water consumption in the Townsville region.
- Business experience:
I was the owner/manager of the Thai International Restaurant for two
years.
- Education experience:
I have worked as an educator for the past 25 years. I am currently employed
as a Learning Adviser at James Cook University.
